JUST IN: According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, officers responded to a burglary alarm and as they walked along the property’s perimeter, they allegedly saw what appeared to be hundreds of catalytic converters strewn throughout the backyard.
According to the Cook County Sheriff’s Office, police officers responded to a burglary alarm at Sandoka’s home Sunday, but when they arrived, no one answered the door. As they walked along the property’s perimeter to secure the home, they allegedly saw what appeared to be hundreds of catalytic converters strewn throughout the backyard.
The sheriff’s office said Sandoka owns a towing company, but there’s no record showing that he or his business have a license to buy, sell, recycle or possess catalytic converters. Sheriff's police officers and members of the Illinois Statewide Auto Theft Taskforce executed a search warrant on the property Tuesday, where they recovered 612 catalytic converters of “all shapes and sizes,” according to the sheriff’s office.
Those converters were also in various stages of rust, according to the sheriff’s office, including some which had no rust, indicating they had recently been cut from vehicles. When Sandoka failed to provide converters with documentation showing he owned the parts or that he had a license to buy, sell, recycle, or possess them, he was placed under arrest.
