New research examines how personality changes over time.

They say the only constant in life is change. Times change. Technology changes. We grow older. But what about personality? Does the essence of who we are change over time? Or, do aspects of our personality remain fixed against an otherwise ever-changing world?sheds light on this fascinating question. A team of scientists from the University of Houston, the University of Illinois, and the University of Tübingen in Germany examined personality data spanning 50 years.

To answer these questions, the researchers compared participants' 1960 and 2010 personality test results on the following traits: vigor, calmness, maturity, impulsiveness, self-confidence, culture, sociability, leadership, social sensitivity, and tidiness. The authors write,"Of the ten personality traits assessed, mature personality exhibited the highest level of reliable change, with 60.7% of the people in the sample showing change, mostly increases . The lowest level of reliable change was found for leadership, where 21.4% of the people in the sample showed reliable change, mostly increases again ."

How do these results fit in the broader context of personality research? For one, they reaffirm the idea that personality has a sizable genetic component . It is difficult to imagine, for instance, that one's environment at age 16 would much resemble their environment at 66 — and yet the data suggest people possess a remarkable amount of personality consistency.
