For athletes in attendance, the games were certainly less of a celebration than in previous years, Seidel says.Athletes’ families and friends were, and athletes were more or less quarantined in the isolation bubble of the Olympic village. Seidel and the other marathoners were even more shut off than athletes in other events, as they stayed in a satellite village in Sapporo, where the Olympic marathon was moved to from Tokyo in an effort to escape the capital city’s oppressive heat.

In a year of great uncertainty, there was ultimately joy to be found in the fact that the Olympics were happening at all. For much of 2020, Seidel’s Instagram bio read “Pending Olympian” instead of “Olympian.” But with tempered expectations, she made it to Tokyo after all—and finished in style. “We ordered pizza and just caught up all night about my experience, the race, feelings, and just experienced the joy together,” she says.

At the same time, though, it also opened the door for probing and sometimes invasive questions. Some people and some media, Seidel says, have overstepped the line.
