Grier was teammates with a current Shark during his three years as a San Jose player.

Mike Grier became the first Black general manager of an NHL team Tuesday when the Sharks officially announced him as their new front-office leader.

The former Sharks player will be tasked with turning around a franchise that has fallen on hard times over the last three seasons after nearly 20 years of playoff contention. Grier steps into the role vacated by Doug Wilson, who stepped down this spring following an extended health-related absence. Wilson directed the Sharks for 19 seasons, making Grier’s new job one focused on forging a new path ahead for San Jose.

Grier played 221 games for the Sharks, tallying 78 points over three years beginning with the 2006-07 season. The Sharks made the playoffs in each of his three years in the Bay, but never advanced past the conference semifinals. In total, he played 14 seasons in the NHL and more than 1,000 games between Edmonton, Buffalo, San Jose and Washington.
