5 radical ideas to re-imagine conferences paid SAP
The same old format, similar content and recycled presentations perhaps left you numb. Most conferences and trade shows are sparsely attended, and high turnouts are mainly the result of free passes and goodies. Internal events are often a sham. And then there are fundraising events – too many of them, almost all attended by friends and family.
Most organizations fall into the trap of holding too many events. The number of conferences is rapidly increasing because conducting an event is the fastest way to get some attention and eyeballs, and provides one with a false sense of achievement. But does it really serve the purpose? Most of the success metrics are biased and are easily gamed for short term benefits.
One example of such a conference is The Human Gathering, an invite-only immersive three-day event that attempts to turn the format of the traditional conference on its head. There are no schedules or recordings. This is probably the only event where the attendance is intentionally reduced year by year so that the purpose is not diluted.
Instead of ensuring that only the person who can afford to spend on the conference will attend, find the person who will gain the most benefit from it. It should be, where we allow few but deep friendships to develop. The intangibles will far outweigh the tangibles when being inspired becomes a collective feeling — one that is not triggered by some ‘rockstar’ speaker but created by all-pervading goodwill.
