With the Trials looming and two contracts expiring next year, she faces plenty of questions. But the adversity, she said, has only fueled her to figure out the answers. Here’s some of what she’s learned.
Being honest about her situation instantly relieved pressure to perform, she said. Her family could choose whether to cheer her with the full knowledge she might not finish .. “Once I let go and was like, ‘Yeah, I am injured,’ I wasn’t so stressed about being injured anymore,” she said. “I just kind of let go of that and tried to figure out how to heal.”, with critics commenting on everything from her body size to her relationship with Hudson.
In some cases, that assistance was practical. When she dropped out of New York at mile 12, she knew she’d have to wait a long time for the sweeper van. So, she began walking back along the course toward a subway station. A fan recognized her and asked if she was okay, and agreed to swipe her into the train in exchange for a selfie. Sitting awkwardly in her racing clothes, she took the G train back to Central Park, watched the leaders and the top Americans cross the finish line, then headed to the New York Athletic Club to reunite with her family.
Her social media posts about her setbacks have also netted her virtual encouragement. When she’s honest—for instance, about dropping out of the race—her more than 60K followers offer “massive good vibes” to carry her through, she said.
