ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Last week, the U.S. Department of Transportation notified the state that its four-year statewide transportation improvement plan required multiple corrections to become eligible for federal funds.
The STIP covers numerous projects for 2024 into 2027 that cost $5.6 billion. According to state officials, all but $522 million of STIP funding comes from the federal government, and would be required in state and local government matching funds over the next four years.from the Federal Highway Administration and the Federal Transit Administration.
“Were the people that were formulating and putting the information together, were they experienced? Had they been involved in doing a STIP previously?” Stutes asked. “I would hesitate to say not experienced in putting together the elements but a brand new STIP, yeah, we had a lot of new people,” Anderson said.
