Ruing the missed free throws against Boise State, whether to press in altitude and clearing the bench
One thing you learn quickly about Matt Bradley is that he is humble and human, cerebral and critical, able to step back and impassively, objectively, sometimes callously analyze his performance. He’s not big on excuses or rationalizations.
Except his teammates haven’t forgotten about everything else their leading scorer has done this season. “Our pressure, I think, wore them down,” Dutcher said of Omari Moore and Alvaro Cardenas, who played 37 and 33 minutes, respectively, and combined for eight turnovers. “It was a cumulative effect, where nothing was easy. Even getting the ball up the floor was hard. Being short-handed, they did the best they could to try to keep fresh legs on the floor. But they didn’t have enough guards available ... and we took advantage of that.
“We have a deep bench, that’s why we’re able to press,” Dutcher said. “We can keep fresh legs on the floor. Obviously, the question is can we press at altitude? Are we going to be tiring ourselves out by pressing? Sometimes the coaches want to press, and they look up and the team doesn’t. We’re trying to coax them getting up there and pressing. Sometimes they might know their bodies better than we do.
Dutcher did what’s right, rewarding a season of hard, unglamorous work at practice with a couple minutes before a near sellout at Viejas Arena. He also wasn’t concerned about the consequences.
