High levels of oil and grease contaminants were found in 26 areas in Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro, Department of Health (DOH) Officer-In-Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said on Tuesday.
In a joint statement, the DOH and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources said that only nine of the 35 sampling stations tested in Puerto Galera met the criteria for DENR’s Water Quality Guidelines and General Effluent Standards of 2016.
The department also suggested avoiding consumption of contaminated fish, shellfish, and other seafood products from the affected areas. “Hindi na tayo magaantay pa ng patuloy pa na test. Nakakita na po tayo ng accurate results,” she added. “‘Yung mga number ng mga kaso ng pagkakasakit, ngayon ay zero. Wala na pong nagpapatingin. I think the preventive measures have worked for us. Nagkaron lang talaga noon ng dagsa dahil pauna tapos syempre hindi pa alam kung ano ang gagawin,” she added.
