Built in Japan at the Tahara and Hino plants on the same fully-boxed frame that underpins the new Tundra, as well as the 2024 Tacoma and Lexus GX, the new Land Cruiser comes to our shores in three grades: A base 1958 version with round headlights reminiscent of the FJ40 and FJ60; a Land Cruiser edition with square headlamps giving a nod to the FJ62; and a First Edition with round headlamps limited to 5,000 units in North America, about 300 of which are destined for Canada.
With its squared-off front and rear, upright front glass, and chiselled sides, the new model does indeed carry historical Cruiser DNA; however there is no split tailgate, just a regular, van-like liftgate, although powered on the Land Cruiser and First Edition. The truck is not as big as the 200 series, and instead is about the size of the existing 4Runner, but a couple of inches taller, longer, and in wheelbase. It feels spacious inside with excellent visibility.
A multi-link, coil spring suspension in the rear should ensure it rides infinitely better than many of the older trucks that rode on leaf springs — although many of those ride pretty well, given their tractor-like dispositions. Electronic power steering and an electronic, two-speed transfer case, however, are evidence of the march of modern times.1958 versions get manually-adjustable heated front cloth seats, a heritage grille, crawl control, 18-inch wheels, an 8.
An available “premium package” — available on the mid-range Land Cruiser — adds the same leather seats, 14-speaker JBL Sound system, head-up display, digital rear-view mirror, and a sunroof. It will come in seven colours, including White, Wind Chill Pearl, Undergound, Black, Meteor Shower, Trail Dust, and Heritage Blue. The base 1958 model only comes in White, Black, and Meteor Shower. Heritage Blue and Trail Dust get a Grayscape roof, and are the only two colours available on the First Edition.
