NHRA kicked off its 73rd year with a sold-out crowd and wild racing at Gainesville Raceway.
The COVID-19 pandemic marked major changes in a lot of industries, and in the case of the NHRA drag racing series, it was the catalyst for juggling their event schedule lineup. For the third year in a row, the 55th annual, held at Gainesville Raceway in Florida, stepped into the role as the season opener for the 21-event national series. Also new for this year is the title sponsor, withThe “Gators” is hailed as the largest single day of drag race attendance.
The categories were dominated by Team Kalitta, with JR Todd running through the Funny Car field and Shawn Langdon capturing theLangdon has come out swinging under the tutelage of Brian Husen, a new crew chief for the Kalitta Air Careers Toyota Top Fuel entry. The team ran well in preseason testing, but they were still licking their wounds from a first-round loss during the PRO Superstars Shootout at Bradenton Motorsports Park a few weeks prior.
