A look at every N.J. player taken in the MLB Draft directly out of high school
Mike Trout, Rick Porcello, Willie Banks and Eric Duncan were all New Jersey high school baseball players who were first-round picks in their respective MLB DraftsProfessional baseball changed when Rick Monday was the first pick in the 1965 Major League Baseball Draft as baseball entered a new era.
Since that first MLB Draft, there have been nearly 600 New Jersey players taken directly out of high school - Fred Kampf, a right-handed pitcher from Shore Regional being the first and 2022 First-Team All-State performer Caden Dana from Don Bosco Prep being the last. Kampf was taken by the Cleveland Indians in the fifth round of the inaugural draft, where 20 players from various Garden State high schools were selected. Dana was taken in the fourth round last year by the Los Angeles Angels.
