The P400 powertrain comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharged straight-six engine good for 395 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque, which makes great noises. It's linked to an eight-speed automatic gearbox that knows what it's doing. The engine can handle the bigger 130, and while the light steering does little to diminish the added heft, the springs and dampers manage it.
The cruise control functions well once you get it going, but it's convoluted to activate because of unclear icons on the steering wheel; at least one editor mistakenly set a speed limiter instead. Seating positions felt elevated for all our judges, regardless of adjustment, a trait preserving a classic Land Rover sensation. Interior elements are easy to get used to and navigate, though unremarkable. The comparable BMW iDrive 8 system on the X7, for example, was more intuitive to operate.
Ultimately, the Defender 130, like the shortened, two-door Defender 90, is a sort of compromise. In this case, you lose a bit of the 110's tidy proportions and off-road esteem, and the 130's squished third row doesn't quite make up for lost ground. Our well-equipped X-Dynamic SE, at $89,175, isn't as cheap as you can go, with a base S trim starting at $70,575.
