2022 Speed Week canceled as Bonneville Salt Flats flooded by heavy rains.
The Southern California Timing Association, the organization responsible for running Speed Week, sent out the final decision just one day into the week-long event, which began on August 6 and was set to continue until August 12.
"Due to unforeseen weather conditions Speed Week 2022 is officially cancelled," a statement publishedfrom the SCTA read."We are doing our best to recover what we can find out on the lakebed." Heavy rainfall from Friday night into Saturday forced the SCTA to cancel Sunday's events. Shortly after, organizers decided to call the whole week off after discovering the Flats were still flooded, according toPhotos from the Flats shared on social media over the weekend show just how bad the flooding became. Cars, trucks, bikes, and trailers were forced to traverse through the flooded paddock area to escape, with some reportedly getting stuck along the way.
This isn't the first time Speed Week has been canceled. The event was called off in 2014 and 2015, also for flooding.
