2022 election: Q&A with Joseph Rocha, California State Senate District 40 candidate [Opinion]
. Why is it that consumers always seem to be the ones asked to sacrifice? As the cost of renewable energy keeps getting cheaper, we must make sure that companies are making the investments needed to transition.
For near-term relief, we should expand programs that help first-time homebuyers and crackdown on speculation in the real estate market that drives prices up. Discrimination in the housing process still makes finding safe, affordable housing options difficult for certain families in our state. Anti-discrimination statutes must have the teeth they need to fight those breaking the law.
I will prioritize creating permanent supportive housing with access to mental health care, work opportunities and other wraparound services. We can’t build those units overnight. In the meantime, the COVID-19 pandemic helped policymakers realize that the one-size-fits-all shelter model is outdated. We must be willing to consider more innovative ways to get people off the streets.
When these infrastructure projects are built, it is vitally important that the workers hired are local. San Diego workers and San Diego small businesses should be the ones benefiting from the investments. Leadership is tough. Doing the right thing is not always politically expedient. I will always advocate following the science, not denying it. So much is at stake: people’s health, economic security, mental well-being and children’s educational advancement. The consensus of medical experts should determine the direction of public health policy.
