No one is impacted by this tragedy more than the families of the workers who were on the bridge the moment it collapsed.
“In a time when there is so much hatred against the immigrant community, we look to the story of Maynor and Miguel who built bridges to connect communities."
CASA, a Latino and immigration advocacy and assistance-based organization in Maryland, confirms that both 34-year-old Maynor Suazo Sandoval, of Honduras, and 40-year-old Miguel Luna, of El Salvador, were working on the bridge at the time of its collapse. In total, there were eight men filling potholes on the Francis Scott Key Bridge when it collapsed Tuesday morning. Two of those workers did survive. One is still in the hospital. They all worked for a contractor called Brawner Builders.
As of Wednesday, there are still six workers unaccounted for and presumed dead. Among those six are Sandoval, a married father of two from Honduras who has been in the U.S. for 18 years, and 40-year-old Luna, an immigrant from El Salvador who was married with three children and lived in Maryland for over 19 years.
