Iditarod race officials reported Sunday that a two-year-old dog from Utah rookie Isaac Teaford’s team collapsed about 200 feet from reaching the Nulato checkpoint and was pronounced dead after about 20 minutes of being given CPR. Teaford was one of three mushers to scratch on Sunday, the first three retirements of the race.
2 sled dogs die on Iditarod trail as 5 mushers scratchANCHORAGE, Alaska - Iditarod race officials reported Sunday that a two-year-old dog from Utah rookie Isaac Teaford’s team collapsed about 200 feet from reaching the Nulato checkpoint and was pronounced dead after about 20 minutes of being given CPR.
Teaford, a race rookie out of Salt Lake City, was running 27th Sunday when his team reached Nulato at around 9:46 a.m., which is when officials say the dog, named Bog, collapsed. Officials said a “gross necropsy” was done by a board-certified pathologist, but a cause of death was not able to be determined. Officials said further testing will be done to figure out how the dog died., which states that any musher must voluntarily retire from the race, or be forced to withdraw by officials, except for rare circumstances in which a dog’s death happened through no fault of the musher.

2024 Iditarod Begins with Ceremonial Start in AnchorageThe 2024 Iditarod kicks off Saturday with a ceremonial start in Anchorage followed by an official race start in Willow on Sunday.
