The omicron subvariants continue to spread, though experts aren't panicking.

The state Department of Health said New Jersey had 80 cases of the “stealth omicron” subvariants BA.2.12 and BA.2.12.1 as of Monday morning. The strains previously had been found in New York state.

”Of these, 8 were BA.2.12 and 72 were BA.2.12.1. No hospitalizations or deaths reported in the cases,” a spokeswoman for the state health department told NJ Advance Media in an email. “In the last four weeks, BA.2.12.1 has made up 3.1% of sequenced Omicron virus, and BA.2.12 0.3%.”in the Garden State, according to the latest state variant tracker. While it has led to a rise in cases, experts do not anticipate another surge like the one caused by its viral cousin, the original omicron strain.

The state’s seven-day average for new coronavirus cases was 1,691 on Monday — a 19% rise from the previous week, and a 161% spike from a month ago. Stephanie Silvera, an infectious disease expert and professor at Montclair State University, said in a Monday that she was hopeful the subvariants would not lead to another wave of cases like earlier this year.The highly transmissible omicron sublineages — more contagious than BA.2 — have been spreading in Europe and in Syracuse and Lake Ontario, The Washington Post
