Mauri sent EX-87 to Daytona for Smokey to install a V-8 and a Borg-Warner three-speed manual transmission, which was also slated to become available on the '55 Corvette. This probably occurred between November 1 and December 13, when there's a 746-mile gap in the fuel log.
. Zora was tapped to run a slight ringer prototype '56 sedan up the hill. It wore fiberglass bodywork and other not-quite-stock parts, but NASCAR gamely played along and certified the 17:24.05 record., it was determined that speed records were more appropriate, and Duntov reckoned that with a few modifications the Corvette might just be capable of becoming the first American production vehicle to top 150 mph. EX-87 was reassigned to speed-record development duty, and entrusted to Zora.
For the official runs, the two stock cars were piloted by racer John Fitch and aerobatics pilot/speed-record holder Betty Skelton. Duntov drove 6901 with all of EX-87's aero doodads. Strong winds lowered the event's flying-mile record to 145.543 mph for Fitch , and 147.300 mph for Duntov .
