18-year-old suspect arrested in East County school burglary series [Breaking]
Sheriff’s deputies on Wednesday arrested an 18-year-old man they suspect broke into nine elementary and middle schools in East County, making off with tablets and computers during a burglary series that stretched about 10 months.
Investigators say the thief used a nail gun to break glass to get inside the schools, where about 20 Apple tablets and MacBooks were taken, sheriff’s Sgt. John West said. The thief passed up other computer brands. In some of the burglaries, the thief wore a Halloween mask and jacket with camouflage print, West said. Items fitting that description were found in the Pine Valley home where the teen lived, as were several items investigators said were stolen from the schools.
West said the string of burglaries started in August, the most recent one happened Saturday in Alpine. “There are probably more we are still investigating,” he said. Schools in Lakeside and Santee were also hit in the series. West said the suspect had been a student at two of the targeted schools.West said the investigation is ongoing.
