The longtime Symphony Chorus director worked closely with conductor Michael Morgan and helped the orchestra mount a variety of thrilling performances.

Dr. Lynne Morrow leads the Oakland Symphony Chorus in rehearsal at St. Paschal’s Church in Oakland. Morrow has announced she is stepping down as orchestra director.September 14, 2022 at 10:50 a.m.

But it’s her work at Oakland Symphony that has distinguished her career as a musical leader. Morrow came to the organization as Chorus director in 2005 at the invitation of the Symphony’s late music director, Michael Morgan, and continued to work closely with Morgan until his death, at age 63, in August, 2021.

Morrow was also instrumental in many Oakland Symphony concert productions, including performances of Bernstein’s “West Side Story” and Gershwin’s “Porgy and Bess.” She led the commissioning of Michael T. Roberts’ “Mass for Freedom,” which the Symphony premiered in 2019, and presented a three-part series, “The Soul of the Spiritual,” in 2020. In addition to the Symphony’s subscription programs, she worked closely with the Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra.

She and Morgan continued to share a commitment to community work, she noted, as well as maintaining their leadership of the Oakland Symphony and Chorus.
