House Republicans on Oct. 11 chose House Majority Leader Steve Scalise as their party’s nominee for speaker. on Wednesday. But 24 hours later there’s still no floor vote scheduled, and it’s looking increasingly likely heScalise suffers from the same problems now-ousted Speaker Kevin McCarthy did : A very slim GOP majority in which he can lose only around four Republicans votes, combined with a very fractious Republican conference.
Only around half of House Republicans voted for him over Rep. Jim Jordan in a private GOP meeting on Wednesday, and plenty are now publicly holding out.who have indicated they won’t vote for him — well more than Scalise can afford without Democratic support — and others are privately against him as well.
