Sixteen Republicans who allegedly sought to replace Michigan's electoral college representatives after the 2020 election with a slate supporting then-President Donald Trump are facing felony charges, Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Tuesday.

Then-candidate Joe Biden beat incumbent president Donald Trump in Michigan by more than 154,000 votes in the November 2020 election. “Dana Nessel’s a fool, she’s a propagandist,” Thompson said. “They’ve created a mess. They’re not going to go anywhere with it. Not one of these prosecutions has bite. It is an attempt to put pressure on the ill-informed and feed the narrative to a population that is woefully lacking knowledge of the processes of our government.”
Each of the sixteen charged faces eight counts. The charges are conspiracy to commit forgery, a 14-year felony, two counts of forgery, a 14-year felony, conspiracy to commit uttering and publishing, a 14-year felony, uttering and publishing, a 14-year felony, conspiracy to commit election law forgery, a five-year felony, and two counts of election law forgery, a five-year felony.
Nessel’s offices alleged those individuals charged “met covertly in the basement of the Michigan Republican Party headquarters on Dec. 14, and signed their names to multiple certificates” claimed to be the legal electors. The Department of Attorney General said the investigation is ongoing, and didn’t rule additional charges against others. Nessel cast the prosecution as a duty to the public.
