Jeff hands survivors an envelope full of money — sometimes in American dollars, sometimes in a local currency — and puts covered and uncovered items up for auction. Food, advantages, luxury items, and letters from home are usually in the mix, but watch out. Sometimes a covered item will be nothing but a small bowl of white rice or seawater. While pooling money and splitting items used to be allowed, in more recent seasons there are rules against it.
do I want a peanut butter and jelly now, or do I hold out for the possibility of spaghetti and meatballs at the end — and in those early seasons especially when rice rations back at camp seemed to be truly dire, extra calories before a big immunity challenge really make or break who wins. But the format is just so enticing. The addition of covered mystery dishes, covered dish swaps, luxury items, and advantages has only made it better to watch and sound more fun to participate in.
