Even great fantasy movies sometimes lose millions at the box office, as evidenced by these under-appreciated classics that flopped upon release.

While some fantasy movies strike gold at the box office, a lot of stunning entries into the genre end up flopping despite their immersive worlds and effective mythology. Fantasy is a tough genre for filmmakers to succeed in. While horror movies can be made relatively cheap, fantasy tends to require a lot of elaborate world-building. For authors, this might mean a few lines describing a lush kingdom or a desolate wasteland but, for directors, it can mean a lot of money.

11 The Kid Who Would Be King Director Joe Cornish gave both Jodie Whitaker and John Boyega early starring roles in 2011’s Attack the Block, a smart, subversive horror sci-fi that upended the rules of both genres. While making Attack the Block 2 would have made sense, Cornish instead opted to helm The Kid Who Would Be King. A light-hearted, action-packed adventure story, The Kid Who Would Be King begins with its young hero finding Excalibur in contemporary London.

8 Ella Enchanted 2004’s Ella Enchanted sees Anne Hathaway star as a young girl cursed to do whatever she is told. A funny, fresh reinvention of the fairy tale genre, Ella Enchanted has the tone of a live-action Shrek sequel and benefits from a superb central turn from Hathaway. However, this bubbly fantasy comedy inexplicably proved a major disappointment upon release, earning only $31 million on a budget of $27 million.

5 Legend Although Tom Cruise might seem like an unstoppable superstar, 2017’s The Mummy remake proves the actor can fail from time to time. Interestingly, 1985’s dark fantasy Legend was another rare foray into the genre for Cruise and another victim of disappointing financial underperformance. Despite a superb cast including Cruise, Mia Sara, and a typically scene-stealing Tim Curry, Legend failed to connect with audiences. The Ridley Scott-directed effort earned only $23.
