Eleven people were displaced over the weekend as the result of a house fire in the Elgin National Watch Historic District.
Firefighters arrived just after 10 p.m. Saturday to find smoke and fire coming from the second floor of a house in the 400 block of South Liberty Street, an Elgin Fire Department news release said.
Extinguished in about 15 minutes, the fire caused an estimated $200,000 in damaged and the home’s 11 occupants had to be relocated to alternate housing after the structure was deemed uninhabitable, the release said. One firefighter was transported to the hospital with a non-life-threatening injury and later released after being evaluated. The cause of the fire is under investigation, the release said.
