World War Z was once tipped to become a 'genre-defining' blockbuster that would change zombie movies, which didn't prove to be the case.
An early version of Brad Pitt's World War Z held the potential to be a "genre-defining" zombie movie, which sadly didn't prove to be the case. Given how ubiquitous the undead are in popular culture now, it's hard to imagine a period where there were almost no zombie movies or TV shows to speak of. The success of the Resident Evil games in the '90s eventually led to movies like 28 Days Later or the Dawn of the Dead remake, and suddenly zombies were everywhere.
World War Z Is A Good Zombie Movie, But Has Largely Been Forgotten World War Z finally hit screens in 2013, and while reviews were relatively lukewarm, it became a comfortable financial success. This proved to be something of a surprise to industry commentators, who predicted the movie's PG-13 rating, huge changes to the source material and tales of production woes would cause it to flop. Ultimately, World War Z is a solid - if somewhat forgettable - zombie blockbuster.
There's also the fact World War Z takes place after the war has ended, meaning the narrator is never in real danger and there's no ticking clock to beat. From the sounds of it, Straczynski's World War Z screenplay licked those challenges, but the serious, bleak tone it presented likely scared producers off.
