The franchise’s fantastical nature means it can take a lot of liberties when it comes to realism, but there are still some irritating inaccuracies.
The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is by no means a sprawling, multi-film history lesson on the maritime events of the 18th century, but the way its lore tries to ground itself in the authentic past is what makes its inaccuracies problematic. As a fantasy series, it has the freedom to take lots of liberties and undeniably does this with creative flair and imagination.
Singapore Wasn’t British Until 1819 The Republic of Singapore traces its history back a thousand years, when it was a maritime emporium and major trading post for several successive empires. It features in At World’s End as a bustling port town and the headquarters of fierce pirate lord Sao Feng.
POTC Uses The Wrong Flags The use of ensigns in the Pirates of the Caribbean series is similarly dysfunctional, although, like costumes and uniforms, the evolution of flags was particularly fluid when the series was set. The use of the Union Jack by merchant ships in Curse of the Black Pearl is wrong , and the version used throughout the series is the contemporary one, which was not designed until Great Britain and Ireland became two united kingdoms in 1801.
Walking The Plank Wasn’t Invented Yet Pirates are notoriously associated with walking the plank. It is arguably the easiest association to make when discussing the golden age of maritime piracy, which is generally designated as having lasted from the 1650s until the 1730s. If this association was accurate, then the plank’s use by Captain Barbosa in Black Pearl – which leads to Jack and Elizabeth’s marooning – would be acceptable.
