The road to a series on Adult Swim was long but surprisingly direct for Bonsu, creator of Adult Swim’s colorful pop-art hangout confection “Lazor Wulf,” about a wolf with a laser on his back who hangs with pals including Stupid Horse and God in laid-back Strongburg.
“In the middle of a production, there is always a time of crisis since all the teams on the film are layered and you feel like you’re running after everything,” says the French animator, who previously won prizes for a short entitled “Skhizein.” “I was thinking at that point, ‘No more animated features ever again!’ But it is like being at the top of a hill: Problems get progressively solved, departments wrap one by one, you get more visibility, and see the light at the end of the tunnel.
She’s directing the Sony Pictures Animation feature “Tao,” a project that she’s incredibly excited about. “It’s all very secretive at this point as the plot is being kept under wraps, but it’s a sci-fi adventure set in China, and it’s going to be spectacular,” she says. She “loves to push boundaries in my work,” which is not a surprise for someone who grew up idolizing the films of Peter Jackson, George Miller and Peter Weir.
And it’s the sense of community that’s fostered at Laika that strongly appeals to Dalmer as an artist. “We’re a smaller company, so anyone can try their hand and something that they’re interested in,” he says. She came up with the idea of the Gabby Gabby villain doll. “I really wanted to have a girl baby doll character in the ‘Toy Story’ universe [to have] more female toy characters in general. But also, why was there never a baby doll? It’s so signature of every little girl.” She says the doll was inspired by one that her mom had as an adult. Of all the toys around the house while LaPointe was growing up, that was the one that was off-limits.
